Work on the so-called “airport link” is in full swing. This is a 26-kilometer high-capacity railroad line between northern Burgenland, eastern Lower Austria, and Vienna-Schwechat Airport. The total cost is 1.9 billion euros.

“The necessary official procedures are currently being processed, including the environmental impact assessment,” says ÖBB General Director Andreas Matthä. The task now is to find appropriate solutions with local residents and citizens’ initiatives “so that we can find the best possible route for the line.”

Direct connection without changing trains

The airport link aims to provide direct access from northern Burgenland to Vienna Airport and on to Vienna Central without changing trains. For the first time, the municipalities of Klein-Neusiedl, Schwadorf, Enzersdorf, and der Fischa will have an efficient rail connection.

The new train line will be designed for a maximum speed of up to 250 km/h. The environmental impact assessment procedure is due to be completed in 2026, and the Ministry of Transport will issue a decision. Preliminary work is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the completion of the airport link scheduled for 2034.
